Bob,
According to the tire guide, '84 - '89 Jetta GLi models all came original equipment with 185/60R14 which has an overall diameter of approx. 22.74" The 16V model came with 205/55R14 which is only .14" taller at 22.88" OD.
There are a couple of other ways you can also check what size came OE -
There should be a placard on the door jam or glove box that lists tire size info along with recomended inflation pressure. Your owners manual should also have a section that lists this info as well. A VW dealer should be able to reference this info by vehicle model as well as they should be able to check your exact vehicle with it's VIN # depending on their data base access. You could also check out VW's web site.
You may also want to explore some web site for VW clubs or organizations (private), you shouldn't have much trouble finding a Jetta GLi club. If tire sizing is correct, which it looks like it is, they may may be able to offer you some insight on vehicle performance and or modifications based on things like engine RPM's and tire sizing.

Hope it helps
