What you describe is called feather-edge or heel and toe wear. This type of wear is generally alignment related - usually toe. The problem with alignment settings that are "basically ok" is that the settings can be "within tolerances" at either end of the limit and still give you poor tire wear. Any good alignment shop can adjust your cars, within tolerances, to improve your wear. If your shop can't/won't try, it is time to look for another alignment shop. Regular rotation, 5000 to 7500 mile intervals, will also help prevent this type of wear.
