I have a 1995 850 Turbo with the original Michelins at 26K miles. Drive hard and have never had a problem (other than they are useless in snow - therefore, use snow tires). Running higher tire pressures (I use 36/33 F/R) diminishes likelihood of pothole damage, makes for better handling/response BUT also increases ride harshness. Going to a 205/55 will soften ride, reduce danger of tire/rim damage, but will slightly reduce acceleration, change speedo accuracy and diminish handling. Life's full of compromises. There are many posts discussing the Michelin Pilot 205/50 problems, cures and alternatives on an excellent Volvo board at "brickboard.com". Use the board's search engine to find the many threads with exhaustive discussions. Your concern is, unfortunately, quite common for 850 owners.
