If wet grip, dry grip and hydroplaning resistance are all important then try a
medium soft rubber compound, and a moderate tire width with lots of grooves to remove water.
You might want to forego the big wheels and go for a 205-55 on a 16x6 rim although that's
your preference. Soft rubber wears quickly but given your annual mileage and with your ability
afford a new car and 17" rims and tires, I humbly suggest this may not be a problem for
you. With a decent suspension you don't need really wide/low profile tires. I used to
have a 323GT with 185/60-14 Yokohama street legal racing (soft rubber) tires on the stock
rims. They departed quickly, but had astounding levels of wet and dry grip (not very
good in puddles).
