Volvo 850GLT Tire Nightmare

I have a 1993 Volvo 850 GLT which has required three tire and wheel replacements (a costly endeavor) after driving into New York City potholes. I love the car but this tire thing is getting out of hand. My dealer says that they haven't gotten similar compalints, I find this hard to believe. I would love to change the tires to something a little more pothole friendly but I don't want to loose the performance aspect. Any similar expereinces or advice?
