The Dunlop Winter Sport M2 is not being phased out. This is a German produced product that is very current in Dunlop offerings of winter tires. As a matter of fact, of the product you mentioned it is the only one one that is approved for application by most eurpoean car manufactuers. It is also the only one, of those you mentioned, original equipment (option) on Porsche, BMW, Audi and Mercedes Benz. That is not widely known in the US because there are no winter tire original equipment fitments in the US.

Based on your decription of winter driving conditions you encounter there is not a concern of wider VS narrower being better or worse. There will be better handling and overall performance maintained with a wider tire even with a winter tire application. Hope this helps and clearifies some bad information you are receiving.
