Ford's tire recommendation for 95' Explorer

The explorer manual and my dealer says it is
important to use the tires that Ford specifies
on my 95' Explorer. I would like to go with
an alternate. The most recent Consumer Reports
also says that deviating from the manufacturer's
recommendation can drastically alter the handling
of an SUV. Is this true or is it crap? I've noticed
a lot of posts from people NOT following Ford's
recommendation. What is the truth here?
