Kuhmo Winter Tires

Anyone ever hear about Kuhmo winter tires?
So far almost every garage has told me winter tires don't last long, won't help you out on ice (unless studded) and given the right thread, aren't much different from one another. The brand Kuhmo came up twice, but I've never heard of them.
I don't want to spend a fortune for my tires, yet I want to feel safe. I live in Canada where winters are -30° and lots of snow, bad roads and ice.
Any suggestions other than the standard Blizzak, Artic Alpin, Hakka Q, Ultra Grip? I can't afford those.
