Bigger tires on a 97 Wrangler TJ?

I have a 97 Wrangler TJ SE, need new tires, and want to put larger ones on it to take up some of that extra room in the wheel well. My question is: HOW BIG??? I have 215/75R15's on it now, and was about to run a set of 30/9.50R15's. But then I read on here about how larger tires will reduce the gas mileage. And someone had recommended to another that you should have a larger engine if you're going to increase size much. I only have a 4-cylinder, and mileage is already pretty poor (17 city/20 HWY). And are there rubbing issues with the fender flares? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
