Storing tires on rims, standing up or on their sides?

When storing tires mounted on rims, is it better for them to be standing up their tred or lying down on their sidewalls. Both positions seem to have shortcomings. Tires stored standing up, even without the weight of the car pressing on them, could develop flat spots. Tires stored lying on their sides could put weight on the sidewalls in a direction they were not designed to withstand.

The best solution would seem to be hanging the wheels on the wall or from the ceiling. Has anyone done this? If so, please provide tips/hints to ensure success. Thanks.
