Impreza GX 2.0 FWD Wheelspin problem

I have a 97 Subaru Impreza (down in Australia this was still a FWD version) and I have a repeated problem of wheelspin on the front wheels (obviously) at low throttle. This is due to the fact the Subaru gearing is such that it produces more power at low levels (than say Mitsubishi). I am currently using Michelin Energy MXV3As 195/75 R14s, as originally equiped - they are 14,000 kms, so they aren't even nearly worn out yet. Would be most grateful for any opinions.
