Goodyear GT noise...fact or fiction?

The 944 I recently picked up seems way too noisy at 35mph on up...even with the clutch in. It is hard to believe it's not the tires, which are brand new looking, but which are apparently no longer produced. I read some casual references to Goodyear GT noise on the BBS, but wonder if it would be worth the cost to go to a known quiet tire, and if recent technology has made those GT's a joke. They are quite precise and athletic, and I hate to loose the seemingly high limits, but the droning makes me not even want to drive the car! They are 215/60 15's and the car is driven only in the summer. Thinking of P 6000's. Any Porche people with advice?
