Sidewall damage = replace tire?

Hello,

I recently rotated the stock Firstone FR680 tires for the
second time on my 97 Civic EX. I discovered one tire had a
vertical gash, about 1 inch long, and deep--I could see
the steel belt in the sidewall. And the tire appeared to
be bulging on either side of the gashAnother tire had a 4 inch
gash that followed the contour of the tire, not as deep--
I believe it just penetrated the first layer of polyester
or whatever's in there.

So my question is, is this damage enough to warrant me
replacing the damaged tires, or will the tires be OK?

I believe the damage is from running over a bottle on
Lake Shore Drive in Chicago--I had no choice, there was
traffic all around me.

Anyway, any help is appreciated. Thanks!
Justin
