Thanks for responding. The tire we're talking about looks like someone set the emergency brake and then dragged the car behind a tow truck, with the tire worn clear down through the belts.

Can that kind of wear develop slowly over time? I think that it's more
likely that the tire was shaved down after the collision, maybe during a
sideways skid with lots of vertical compression. I don't think the tire had
anything to do with the accident.

On my old VW squareback, I remember getting regular cupping patterns around
the perimeter of a tire, but I've never seen a tire worn down flat on just
one side. Does this occur with alignment problems?
