I have these tires on my Mustang and my wife's Escort. I haven't had any problems with them. They work much better in snow than an all-season. I'm sure there are better snow tires, but like you said, at about $50 a tire, they are a good deal. I am on my third and probably last winter with this set. I don't really drive that much (probably 4K miles each winter), but my car (actually my driving) goes through tires quickly. The set on my wife's car with about 10k miles look brand new - they have been sitting in the back hallway the last couple of weeks so I look at them all the time :-) They are rather LOUD on the highway, but I couldn't tell you if they are louder than any other snow tires.
