Topic: Replacing Temporary Spare Tire

I have a 2003 Honda Odyssey which has been a great car. Last month I was up in the Sierra Nevada mountains about 20 miles from nowhere on a mountain pass when I hit a rock and bubbled the tire. I drove down to the nearest town which was all closed up becuase it was 7:00 PM on a Sunday night. So I decided to drive a little further on it but at the next rest stop the bubble was getting worse so I went to the temporary spare tire. Unfortuantely Honda, like many other car makers, uses a little pigmy temporary spare tire. So I wound up driving for four hours across the Mojave desert at 50 mph wondering if (1) the spare would fail because the van was fully loaded or (2) I was going to be rear-ended or run off the road becauase I was driving 25 or 30 miles an hour slower than traffic on a 2 lane road. I'm just really happy it was at night and not during the heat of the day. I would like to use a normal tire as a spare so I don't have to worry about weight and driving speed. In their deep forsight
;-) Honda didn't leave enough room in the well for a full size spare tire. I was wondering that since the temporary spare is not the same diameter (115/60-16) as my normal tires (226/60-16), if I could instead buy a 16 inch rim and purchase a thinner tire (maybe a 185/60-16, etc.) that would fit in the well. I know the handling of the van would definitely not be the same and like the tempoary spare I would have to turn off the TCS system. I would NOT use this in my normal tire rotation nor would I use this tire any longer than I would the temporary spare tire. But at least I could drive on it at highway speeds and not worry getting rear ended. So my question is this: would this work or am I asking for trouble?
