My 1997, S-10 Blazer 4WD came equiped with Michelin XW4 P235/70R15 tires which now have 40K miles and need replacing. I have talked to several tire dealers: one suggests replacing the tires with an equivalent Dunlap tire, another with equivalent Kelly tire and the third with an equivalent "Prospector" tire? These suggested "equivalent tires" have price tags only about 60% that of the Michelin with 20K miles more guarenteed tread life. What is the story? Is the Michelin just overpriced or is it that much better? I drive mostly on the highway with some snow and occasionly tow a boat. The Michelin's have served me well, but their life has not been spectacular. I'm looking for help in making an informed decision. Help please!IP: Logged |

The XW4's are a nice riding tire, (hence the OEM usage) but nothing spectacular as far as Michelin is concerned. Don't get stuck in a P235/70r15 rut. You can easily change to a P225/75r15 or P235/75r15 tire. Your choices grow a thousand times with these sizes. I won't even suggest a specific tire for this application with this many choices. The key is to con your local GM dealer into reprogramming your computer into whatever size you pick (for speedo calibration). It actually takes about one minute with a Tech2 to do this. I'm sure you can pick a quality name brand tire when you change size. The sizes specified would not change the handling at all. The P235/75r15 is actually an optional size available in that year.IP: Logged |

If you liked the XW4 and want to stay w/Michelin, try the Michelin LTX M/S (or the LTX A/T if you do more off road driving). The M/S will be quieter on the street. Either choice is better in every respect (except maybe ride, and with the S-10, who notices?) and they should last almost twice as long!DaveB's suggestion to switch to 235/75/15 is a good one. Even if you don't have a chance to recalibrate your speedo, it won't be off by much. IP: Logged | |
