Topic: Michelin X Radial LT Versus LTX M/S

I'm looking for tires for my 91 Explorer. Costoc is selling the Michelin X Radial LT which I cannot find advertised on Michelin's web site. They can order the LTX M/S for about the same price.What is the difference between the two tires? Tire Rack told me they were similar but the X Radial LT was $40 each more as it was more heavy duty than the LTX M/S. Why doesn't Michelin list the X Radial LT on their own web site? I have studed snow tires for the winter here in Idaho, and I'm looking mainly for highway tires that are smooth, quite, long lasting and good fuel economy. I've always used the Radial X on my passenger cars and like them very much. Much regards IP: Logged |

Well I was very happy when I saw this post until I noticed there where no replies. I too am debating and researching the same question of the X Radial LT or the LTX M/S for installation on a 1994 Dodge Dakota Club Cab 2x4. They seem very similar and I like the looks of the X Radial LT a tad better so I am leaning that way. I have read lot's of good things about the LTX M/S but haven't found a whole lot on the X Radial LT so I am not sure? If anyone has any information on the differences between these tires, please post it. Thank you. IP: Logged |

Hi,I talked with the Discount Tire folks and they told me that the X Radial L/T is a custom made tire for discount chains like Costco (where I saw the tire). It is based on the LTX M/S and has a slightly different tread pattern. Michelin will not comment on the differences, but as the Discount Tire salesman pointed out, if it is meant for low cost discount stores, and even Michelin will not comment on it, makes you wonder if they cut some corners to save a few dollars. I decided to go with the LTX M/S, Costco special ordered these for me ($2 difference in cost). The tires will not show up for a week, so if anyone has more info, I'd greatly appreciate it. Hey There:Your point speculating on the quality and "cost cutting" steps potentially made on the X Radial LT is a good one. It makes you go Hhmmm.. My only counter to that is what would Michelin have to gain by intentionally producing an poor product? I suspect the overall design of the LTX M/S has been engineered to a higher degree. However the X Radial LT seems to be based on that engineering so I don't think it will be that far behind that of the LTX M/S. While I think the nod would go to the LTX M/S in pure performance and quality, I really do prefer the look of the X Radial LT so I will probably go with it. My father has the LTX M/S on his Ram 2500 4x4 and to me they just don't have a truck tire look. I figure that in my case, the trade off in the performance will be made up by the look I prefer. But then there is always the other hand of why not get the better "known" tire and order the LTX M/S like you are doing. I appreciate your comments and insight. Decisions.. Decisions.. Decisions.. This is not a specific to these tires, but often tire manufacturers use the same un-cure tire in many different tread designs. For example, the X-One that Michelin sells at its' stores if probably the same uncured tire that goes into the molds for the visually similar Sears WeatherHandler/Guard/whatever. They save money not on worse materials but rather using the same basic package in many different designs.So if you see a tire the looks slightly different in a different retail outlet from the same manufacturer, it probably is the same tire put into adifferent mold. I had a little fiasco that I thought I would share to help those considering tis type of tire.I had the Michelin X Radial LT (Costco Tire) put on my 94 Dakota (2wd) and liked them. They looked good and had a quiet, smooth, but firm, ride. The firmnesswas due the the extra sidewall layers that the LT rating adds. The troublke was that I went a hair bigger and the tire rubbed the inner splash apron during parking lot manuevers. Turns out my research and mechanic opinions were wrong as far as the increased size went. I spoke to Costco and they agreed to work with me on a change of tires. This ment I had to get something they stock. I decided on the Michelin LTX A/T in 215/75R15. This is one size smaller than I had but the original size the truck had so I didn't feel too bad about it. My thoughts on the LTX A/T is that it is a very nice tire. It is very quiet for the All-Terrain style and offers a smoother ride which I like. This is probably due to the P rating of the tire. I have a short commute and the weather has been good so it's hard to say how well it grips in the wet. Seemed good in light rain and very nice on the dry road. Knowing what I do now, I think I would go with the correct size Michelin LTX M/S. I feel it would be a tad smoother and quieter with more tread life and better fuel economy. I am still getting used to the All-Terrain look but it not an overly aggressive tire so it doesn't look too out of place on my 2wd truck. I am happy with the tire and expect to get great service from them. I highly recommend any of the Michelin truck tires, from what I have experienced so far all the rave reviews are warrented. I have both tires on my 2000 Ford F150. It came with the X Radial on it, but needed front tires. I went to Trax Tires, they said the back tires were only 1 -2 years old and did not need replacing. The X Radial is the wholesaler tire version of the LTX M/S. They said it was the same tire with a little different tread pattern. Basically the grooves are wider in the LTX M/S. Both have worked great on the front and the back. The X radials are now about 6 years old with 45 - 60 thousand miles and are still going strong with a lot of tread to go. The LTX M/S are 4 years with 45 thousand miles and still look brand new! I love these tires and recommend both. I live in Mobile Alabama, we get the most rain in the continental US. These tire work well in rain, on the highway and light-off road. We don;t drive in the snow down here!
