I'm going to buy some new wheels for my 91 Explorer which uses Lt235/75/15 tires. Stock rims are 15 X 7, but I am thinking about upgrading to 15 X 8.5. Is this too much wheel for these tires?

The Tire & Rim Association (the US organization that guides the tire industry in size and load matters) does not recommend using over a 7 X 15 rim with LT235/75R15.

There is, I believe, an optional up-size on this vehicle using 16" rims which might indicate that a wider tire would fit in the wheel well. An 8.5x15 rim might fit better with a floatation type tyre, but check and see if someone with actual Explorer experience can help you out. Look for an Explorer website, they usualy list upgrade hints.

Cooper's website indicates a 6" - 7" rim for 235/75R15 tires.
