RSetteHi all:
I am wondering if anyone knows of any concerns if I were to just replace the 2 front tires on my AWD 1996 GMC Safari minivan? Alright, I admit it, I let the tires go too long without rotating them, and as a result the front tires need to be replaced, but the rear are in pretty good shape.

If anyone knows whether this might hurt the AWD system on my van, please let me know.

Thanks very much.

JayRobert, I don't know the system in your vehicle, but if it is true awd as opposed to being able to switch into 2wd, you may indeed cause a problem for yourself. On my Outback, Subaru recommends that the tires not exceed 1/4 inch difference in circumference or you risk damage to the drivetrain. I would check your owner's manual or contact the dealer. With really worn tires, you may be exceeding the tolerances right now, so I wouldn't wait.

Remember too that tire sizes will vary slightly from brand to brand, even in the same size, and sometimes from model to model.
