I have also been confused in that some people say I need to change the first number (215) in the size, others say to change the second number (70). I understand and agree with your comments about changing from the OEM size, but I'm tired of changing flats and replacing tires. There must be a better way other than "jacking the radiator cap" and swapping vehicles. PS: Naples as in Naples, NY?
JV I have a vehicle with tire size 215/70/15 and want to use a light truck tire for durability reasons. Can a different size tire be substituted? What size is acceptable for a 99 Dodge Grand Caravan AWD? Drawbacks/concerns? donfromnaples On a Caravan, I would stick with the stock size. A 225/65R15 or a 205/75R15 would not change your stock settings by much at all. Going to a larger overall diameter like 235/75R15 will improve gas mileage, but throw your speedo- and odometers both off as well as interfere with ABS pulse timing. Why did you want to change from stock size? I like the Michelin X-One(but pricey) and the affordable Pirelli P400 Touring tire. jv I travel on at least 10 miles of dirt/cruched stone road each day. The van (AWD) came with Goodyear Conquest and I'm now runing Toyo 800's. Both brands are fine until the tread is about half gone, then punctures (mainly from stones) are frequent (2 in the last 10 days on two different tires). Would like to go with a thicker ply (light truck) tire to resist punctures. Have looked at the Uniroyal nail guard but don't think it will do any good when a stone the diameter of my thumb finally comes out of the whole. Daveb I know where your coming from. A lot of the soft OEM tires don't even have to be at half tread to get stones going right through them. I put Uniroyal Laredo AWT P205/75r15 on my Sonoma. It was mostly for traction and gravel stability reasons. The side benefits were resistance to stone punctures and premature wear from the usual softer nature of passenger tires against the rougher roads that I drive on. You can get light truck tires in a size that will suit your needs no problem. As far as ride in the caravan, not sure. I would stick with the smoother tread all season truck tires though. You would probably get too much noise in the cabin with a more agressive tread. The smoother tires will be closer to the handling characteristics that you are used to as well.
