Where I live, there is alot of black ice. Heck, Remember the IceStorm last year...... Anyhow, it would be great if somebody can find me reviews or just his opinion on what tire that I should buy. thanks to anybody that responds, Which one of these tires where actually #1 ? -Steph
Steph Winter is coming up and I need to buy winter tires. At the present moment, 2 brands come in mind.
Michelin's Artic Alpines
GoodYear's Ultra Grip Ice
Fot the info, I drive a Ford Escort ZX2 1999.
Jeff November issue of Consumer Reports rates them as #1 and #2. The article referred to the Goodyear as being a expensive and poor in emergency handling though. You might also check into some Nokian tires. These were not tested by CR. The Hakkapeliitta Q is their studless ice tire, and the Hakkapeliitta 1 is a studdable winter tire. I couldn't find anyone who sold the "Q" here in southern Ontario, so I went with the Hakka 1's (not studded b/c it's illegal). So far, I have been impressed not only by the phenomenal perfomance in snow, slush and ice, but the very good dry and wet weather handling also. Steph Thank you Jeff for your input.
Also, would it be possible to send this article to me ?
Jeff Hi Steph. The Michelin was rated as #1. I don't have an actual copy of the article to send you though. Sorry I was considering the Michelin also, but from information I gathered, its shallower tread depth and soft compund causes it to wear fairly fast. I got the Hakka's for about the same price, and was told they would last longer than the Michelin. Without the studs they may not equal the ice perfomance of the Michelin, but snow and slush are my primary driving conditions, ice to a lesser extent.
