Hmmm, 5 Volvo 240s later, I have opinions ...

First, Volvo 240's are EXELLENT rear-drive snow cars, BUT they really excell with a set
of good snow tires. If you're in the snowbelt, I strongly suggest spending $400 on a
set of snowtires mounted on rims (call Tirerack).

So, "handling, traction, and wear" - don't we all want that?!?!?! Assuming you don't need
higher than "H" speed rating, and price is a factor, these immediately come to mind
(prices are mailorder)

Bridgestone RE900, T-Speed rating, $54
Bridgestone RE930, H-speed rating, $55 (better traction, faster wearing)
Dunlop D60/A2, H-speed rating, 195/60 size, $50 --- Best price/performance I've seen
Pirelli P400, T-speed rating, $52
Yokohoma A378, H-speed rating, 195/60 size, $51
