The gas boycott started in Northern California because for various reasons, founded and not, gas prices there doubled up to $1.70 average, while the rest of the US went up a dime to a quarter. SO it was a protest against what people felt were gas companies taking advantage during a price rise...something which many of them have admitted.
In many ways you are right...Americans have been eating more and more gas with bigger engines, outpacing gains made to save gas. So one thing that the rises hopefully will lead to is people taking better care of their cars to gain better gas mileage...simple tune-ups, checking tire inflation, etc. Unfortunately, the prices will have to go up a lot more before we stop thinking that the bigger engine options and vehicles are usually the best choice if we can afford them....
