Sidewall cracking, I am assuming of the ozone variety, is due to weather exposure and aging. You did not mention the age of the tires, but if they are 4 or 5 years old, this is probably normal. I don't think I have ever seen a worn out tire on a motor home - ozone cracking is probably the most common removal reason. As for replacing with a higher ply rating, this will be of little value unless you need the extra capacity. The higher ply rated tire will likely suffer the same exposure related damage.
