The 205/65R15's that came as OE on your car were Aprox. 25.5" overall diameter, the 225/50R16 you are currently using are approx. 24.9" so the are basicly .5"(1/2") shorter than your OE application. If you want to stay with 16" wheels, you have a couple of options.
1- If you want to stay with the 225/50R16 you could install a new set of springs that would lower the car - approx 1"-1.25". Not a "low rider", a good set of aftermarket springs will not only provide nice looks(aggressive),and remove that excessive space between the top of the tire and wheel well opening it will also enhance the handling of your vehicle.
2- You could change to a 215/55R16 = 25.3" OD or 225/55R16 = 25.7" OD
This would provide a tire with a OD closer to that of your OE tire and also help close that "gap".

Hope that helps
