Yokahama AVID MD-H4's bricked on me!-Worn out in the middle!

I bought a set of MD-H4's for my '88 Prelude Si 4WS last year. With only 30K miles or
so they are totally shot in the middle of the tread! I kept them rotated and at the precise
reccommended pressure of 28psi front and rear. The weird thing to me is that 28psi seems
on the lowish side for tire pressure, which, if anything, should produce worn outside tread.
Does anyone have an explanation for this junk? Any suggestions for replacement and prevention
in the future? Thanks.
