Consumer Reports says that the Nokian NRW's are slippery in wet conditions and when cornering in wet weather. Does anyone agree or is CR wrong?IP: Logged |

I found the NRWs unacceptably greasy in everything except snow and ice and dry roads. Nokian has taken the unfortunate step of trying to sell this tire as an "all weather plus" tire...ie: "all season" in anybody's book. My theory is that they were caught in a bind, needing to reposition the tire when the studless Nokian Hakkapeliita 'Q' came out a few years back.Instead of taking the high road and re-marketing the tire as a performance studless winter tire (which it is) they tried to make it into something it never was. I had a set of these on my Honda Civic and they were a huge disappointment. This from a guy who has had innumerable Nokian tires (used to be "Nokia") over the last 15 years. I currently own a set of NRV's, size 195/50VR15 for my '89 CRX Si and a set of Hakkapeliita 1's, size 175/70TR13 for my Civic. I am well pleased with both because they don't make the same compromises that the NRW attempts. /Eric

I'm on my 3rd set of NRW's and will keep buying them, despite a tiff with the dealer. I live in Alaska and drive on ice and snow as much as 8 months a year (this year may be an exception). They are GREAT on ice...you'd think you have studs. I haven't noticed any problems/slipping on wet pavement. IP: Logged |

With a little looking, it appears that Nokian is discontinuing the NRW and replacing it with the WR.The Nokian WR and a number of winter tires were evaluated by ADAC - a German automobile organization. The Nokian WR received the highest ratings among the winter tires in dry road performance, wet road performance, and performance on ice . The biggest detractor was long braking distance in snow. Additionally, it rated low in wear. However, the WR has a Nokian warranty of 50k miles. I spoke with a few Nokian tire dealers. One has the WR's on his F150 truck. He sees them going 50k miles. Are there any other winter tires with that kind of mileage warranty? Overall, the WR sounds like a strong winter tire, an all season tire and long wearing. True enough about the WR but I think we're comparing apples and oranges. The NRW is a different tire.I think the NRW is a fine *winter* tire but I have my misgivings about using it year around. I made a posting a couple of years back to the effect that the NRW made my light little Honda CRX Si into a virtual snowmobile. /Eric IP: Logged | |
