I am looking for suggestions for tires to replace the orginals on my 1997 Mitsubishi Spyder Eclipse GST turbo. The orginal tires were Goodyear Eagle RSA's 205 55 R16 V rated.
I am an average driver. The Mitsubishi dealership says they rarely replace V rated tires with HR rated tires. The cost of v rated tires are an obstacle. Any idea for good replacements ?IP: Logged |

I will risk the assumption that the reason they indicated they "rarely replace V rated tires with H rated tires" is due to the changes in performance characteristics that will accompany the change. I am actually suprised to hear a car dealer indicate such and suprisingly applaud them. It is not a case of how fast you drive which is usually the most common comparison between tirs of different speed ratings. The V & the H are indeed the speed rating designation of the tires, but in relation to normal application & driving the speed ratings influence how well a tire performs at any speed. A higher speed rated tire handles, stops, accelerates, corners, etc., better than a lower one. That is not to say that a lower speed rated tire does any of these things poorly, just that it is designed to do them differently for different reasons.
While their is a cost difference it comes down to the fact that you have been driving on a V rated tire and are acustomed to the performance levels associated with them, to "drop" to a lower rated tire will change the way your vehicle performs. The H rated tires would more than likely still be adequet as you described yourself as an average driver. I would suggest you visit a local reputable independant tire dealer to fully understand your options as well as explore lower cost alternatives available in the market on "V" tires - there are many.IP: Logged |

an affordable performance tire(not for the snow though) is the Kumho Ecsta 712. Best prices are online at tirerack.com and tires.com. Hope this helps.IP: Logged |

Also, remember that in the warranty paperwork for every tire, it states that the speed rating is null and voided when the tire is punctured and repaired. So depending on how often you get your tires patched, the "V" rated tire could turn into an "S" rated tire way before the tread wears out. To maintain the "V" rating, you would have to buy a brand new tire every time you drive over a nail.IP: Logged |

You can replace a V-Rated with a T or S Rated tire. The V is only for high speed performance and they are costly. Most people do replace with a lower speed rating especially if you are just basically using the vehicle to drive on the highway. I would not go all the way down to a non speed rated tire because a speed rated tire is OE on the vehicle. I suggest going with a Uniroyal or maybe a Capital tire.
