I need winter tires. The OEM tires are 225/55R17. The only winter tires in this size are Dunlop or Pirelli. ($$$$$$).
Tirerack.com says I can downsize to 16" wheels where the selection is much broader.
Possible???

You could downsize to a 16" but for what reason? You would have to buy some 16" steel rims and then pick out your tires. You mind as well just choose between the Dunlop and Pirelli winter tires that are available in your size and not have to worry about the fuss of 16" rims(labor, mount and balance, appearance will be less than desirable with steel rims, cost much higher getting rims and tires instead of just tires).
