I was surprised to find that chain store's tires cost about $100 more than the independent tire stores ones (same brand, same tire). I thought it would be cheaper in the chain stores (like merchandise are always cheaper in Walmart) since they have better bargain power. Why?

buying online is the cheapest way to buy tires. tirerack.com, tires.com, victoriatire.com

even with the cost of shipping and handling, I save over $100 for a set of four tires.

Chain stores charge what they can for products, which is not necessarilly the lowest price. They have many "loss leaders" which attract people into the store, and they make up the margin on other products that they do not expect people to "shop around" for (like tires, perhaps?).
