I'm looking at winter tires for my '01 Corolla (185/65R14). I'm going to be driving between central PA (some but not much snow) and the northewest corner of the state (frequent heavy lake effect). So its going to be a high mileage useage (maybe 15-20k miles per winter), and its even liekly that I'll encounter everything from dry roads to near blizzard conditions on the same trip. Right now, I'm thinking a Nokian tire might be the best bet because of their claimed longer tread life. Studs are probably out of the question because of the frequent dry road conditions. Thinking of the Q (dedicated winter tires)or the NRW (all season with winter tire capabiliites)tires. Does anyone have experience /opinions of the relative snow abilities of these two tires? Also, how would their tread life be likely to compare? I would think the NRW would have a longer life and be better on the dry roads but less capable in the snow and ice than the Q.

That probably sums it up right there!

I have the NRW's on my Outback and find them to be excellent in the snow, but I also have awd and I can't say for sure how much that factors into the equation. If you want an all season tire w/the best snow capability, I found the NRW to be the best choice. If you don't mind changing sets, a 3 season tire and a set of Hakka Q's is likely to be your best bet. Hakka Q's will wear faster, but you should still get at least 3 seasons from them - and your other set will last longer too, not having to fight the slippery snow!

It's best to make your decision based on the worst conditions you expect to encounter. Think of it as cheap insurance!
