Topic: Nokian NRW versus Michelin Artic Alpine

I live in Dayton Ohio, would like to know if anyone has personal experience with both the Nokian NRW and Michelin Artic Alpine tires. Appears that NRW's are made for a broad spectrum of driving conditions to incude rain and dry pavement...whereas the Artic Alpines are geared for packed snow and ice. Since Dayton gets various conditions in winter to include: rain, snow, ice, packed snow as well as dry pavement conditions how would the Artic Alpines behave? I have NRW's on my Outback. My neighbor has Arctic Alpins on his Intrigue. Its not the same car, so its not a direct comparison, but here are my thoughts. The Arctics are great snow tires, but they are winter-only tires. Drive them in the summer and they will wear out quickly - my neighbor found out the hard way! I like the NRW's alot. They have a nice ride and are wearing well. I found them to perform very well in the snow and I don't have to change tires at the end of the season. I've never experienced any "out of round" feelings with my tires. Good luck!IP: Logged |

Thanks for the info Jay...I'm now a true believer...I installed the NRW's on my Toyota Echo and they behave very well on dry payment...in fact, I believe there cornering ability appears more stable than the Bridgestone Potenza RE92 that came with the car. Can't wait to try the NRW's in the adverse conditions (snow, rain, ice...). I now believe the Nokian tire company is a upcoming and progressive company on the leading edge of tire development...I've investigated some of the info on their web site and appears they have some very innovative tread and tire designs. to m4echo, how are your nrw's working out for you? i am considering putting these tires on my 01 malibu ls. I am really concerned about dry weather handling and steering response, I have no doubt the nrw's work great in adverse conditions. thanks.IP: Logged |

Ron516...The NRWs are great!!! Have about 3000 miles on them now and have been very impressed with both dry and wet handling. However, if you have a Malibu...this car is somewhat sporty and I would think that these tires are somewhat SUV looking rather than sporty...If you want a tire that can handle the extremes of the elements well (rain, snow, ice...dry) then the NRW is a great tire...I feel and ride is less harsh than the Bridgestone Pontenza's and just as responsive. Thanks for the info, I have decided to mount the NRW's for winter right now on the stock aluminum rims and if I don't think they are up to my spring, summer and fall driving needs I will leave them on the stock rims and buy a new set of rims with high performance tires. This gives me a good excuse to get a new set of wider and lower rims and tires!
