I am on the market for new snow tires. Currently on Gislaved Nordfrost II with half studs (only inner half of tire studded). I have found no discussion regarding half studding snow/winter tires on this very entertaining and informative web site.

I was contemplating doing the same with Nokian Hakka 1's. Does anyone have any experience or a strong opinion for or against half studding Nokian Hakka 1's.

I drive a Saab 9000 Aero, live in Denver with a cabin in the Rocky Mountains. I drive dry, wet, hot, cold, snow, and occasionally icy roads, during the 6 months that my "winter tires" stay on my car. I am looking for the safest, but best compromise in the highly variable weather/road conditions encountered between Denver and Continental Divide during the winter.

All experiences, advice or opoinions are appreciated!

I personally have never heard of someone only studding half a tire, so I'm interested to know what other's experiences are.

I would guess it would be kind of a compromise, giving you less traction than a fully studded tire, but it would also be a bit more quiet and smooth riding.

Has anyone else done this? And what are the advantages and disadvantages?
