I would like to buy snow tires for my 2000 Nissan Maxima SE. The original size tires are 225/50 R17. Can I safely use a slightly different size for which snow tires are made? I have checked Tire Rack, eTires and Discount Tires and have been unable to find a snow tire made in my original size. Any recommendations regarding specific snow tire models?
Thank you.

I'm assuming you will be using the same rims. A "minus zero" size would be 215/55/17, but that sounds like a weird size as well...so does 215/60/17. In fact, I don't think there are any 17" tires that are narrower than 225, and if there were, your wheels would be very exposed to potential curb damage. If you buy new rims, 215/60-16 would be close. The litte extra diameter would reduce your final drive ratio and reduce wheelspin on startup (like starting in 2nd gear).

It looks like you are going to have to change rims to get good snow tires. I would recommend going down to 15" rims and buying Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50 in the 205/65/15. This diameter is very close to what you have now and the narrower tire will bite even better in the snow. Put your 17" wheels back on in the Spring. Good luck.
