They want to replace the tires on my 98 Sienna for the third time. The vehicle has 35,000 miles. Toyota claims Dunlop tires (SP40) are defective, and is trying to blame them for a host of steering and steering wheel shimmy problems. Is this situation unique? Anyone else with similar problems?

Sounds fishy to me. Not knowing SP40's (or a Sienna for that matter), I can't beleive a Dunlop broadline tire would cause this much problem. Is it pulling? If so, the tires should be moved around (side to side) to see if the pull changes. A shimmy with tires these days is not as common an occurance as it used to be (let alone multiple sets). The problem might lie with a defective rim (out of round or a heavy spot). The problem rim should be picked when the tire is balanced. Have any of the sets of tires changed the problem? Does the problem only happen at certain speeds? On Acceration? Decceleration? Maybe it's with the Toyota itself (driveline vibration, tires not mounting on one of the hubs properly, the engine or the transmission). Then there is the problem that the tire is just not compatible with the vehicle. Maybe they just transmit road irregularities on that particular chassis. So many questions (I hope Toyota is at least asking you these!).
