Topic: Changing Tire Size

Dealer specs for tire size for my 1999 Toyota Corolla are 185/65 R 14. My husband just found a "DEAL" on used tires & their size is 195/70 R 14. Is it safe to change to this size? Dealer says NO WAY!!! Please settle this family fued!IP: Logged |

I would have to go along with the dealer for a couple of reasons.
1) The tire diameter is apprx. 1.5" more which will affect handling and might even scrape the fenders when turning. I have a Corolla DX with 195/65/14 which is acceptable but they will scrape a little if I hit a bump while turning hard. I love a deal as good as the next guy, and have been known to bend the rules but I believe 195/70/14 would be pushing it a little.
2) Your speedometer wil be reading about 4mph slower than what you are really going. You could get a ticket if not careful.
3) If your Corolla has antilock brakes, they will be affected also.Hope this helps. IP: Logged |

I agree on no also, that is a large enough change in size where the bigger diameter will negatively affect gearing which will make the car feel slower in response, and handling feel might get rubbery from increased sidewall height.Gary IP: Logged |

I gotta agree with the above. A 195/60 14 may be ok if you need a wider tire (didn't do the math but sounds ok) but a 195/70 will be significantly larger than the OEM size!Btw, do you REALLY want your family driving around on USED tires? IP: Logged |

NO, NO WAY!!! First of all the outside diameter is way to high for the engine/transmission to stay in the proper engine RPM range; the car will not have acceleration at all, the gear shifting will be negatively affected, fuel economy will most likely suffer, the engine has to work extra, I mean really extra hard during acceleration and well you might blow the trany, even thought Toyota makes them very reliable. Also traction, especially in snowy conditions, will suck. I learned it the hard way after some moron changed the tires on my sisters Civic from 175/70/R13 to 185/70/R13, which "just" one size up. No acceleration, bad fuel consuption, worn trany bearings and synchronizers, plus the clutch was gone after 50,000 miles (original lasted over 100,000). Remember; what's cheap is usually expensive in the long run. I hope this is enough to persuade him. Good luck.

BTW, I think Corolla are great, reliable cars.
