I'm buying winter wheels/tires (Pilot Alpins) for my Mercedes SLK which has all season Continentals at the moment. Mercedes recommends either 215/45/17's or 225/45/17's (all round). Currently there are 245/40/17's on the rear and 225's on the front as the standard 'sport' all weather package.

Will I be stupid to pick the chunkier 225's rather than 215's as far as traction (in Michigan) will the difference be marginal compared to the huge difference by going to winter tires from all season 245's ???

There would be a huge difference of winter over summer and a slight improvement of 215 vs. 225, but if 225 is the only size that's fine.

Gary,
thanks for the advice. I couldn't get Pilot Alpins so I settled for Dunlop snow tires. I chose the 225/45/17's and the difference in the snow is Phenomenal! I have no trouble getting about, they aren't any noisier but I have noticed a slight decrease in ride quality but that may be due to much colder temperatures. Thanks again.
