I am looking for a quality winter tire for my Ford Contour. It seems there is much hype around Blizzaks and Nokians that boarders on obsession. From all the tests I have read, (and tire rack has good information but somewhat dubious "tests") the Michelin Artic Alpine seems best for real world driving. I live in Calgary, Alberta and most of the winter driving we do is on hard packed snow in the city or on the highway which can get very icy at times. The pavement can also be bare a good part of the winter as we get Chinooks here that melt the snow, (and then it refreezes to ice).

I plan to mount the snows on steel rims and am thinking of either 195/65/R14's or 195/70/R14's to replace the 205/60/R15's summer tires.

Any thoughts on the Alpines and the wheel combinations? Need some help to rule out the hype.

We had a set of Arctic Alpins on our old Topaz up here in Red Deer, and they were great. I don't think they are quite as good in deeper snow, but their performance on ice and compact snow definitely makes up for it. And they are better than some of the other winter tires on dry pavement because of the interlocking tread design (a little noisy on wet roads, though). I recommend the Alpins.
