I have a 72 Suburban 3/4 ton 4x4 that takes an apparently obscure 16.5" tire. Needing snow tires, I find out nobody makes snows that size anymore, only all-season. My options are to buy the all-seasons (although my present set are still fine for summer use) or spend ++ more to buy 16" rims and outfit them with decent snow tires. The advantage to new rims being I can buy true snow tires and easily swap between summer and winter tire sets, the disadvantage obviously cost (have to get different spare as well) and also some effect on speedometer of different sized tires.
Also, it's been suggested I put 10-ply tires on, but I think my present set is 8-ply. Any thoughts on that?
And, has anybody heard of Huckapalita (spelling unknown) Finnish-made snow tires?
I live in east-central BC, western slope of the Rockies, so face "winter driving conditions" (slush, snow, ice, black ice, packed snow and ice, rutted ice, i.e. generally crappy roads) from mid-November to mid-April anyway.
Any advice would be appreciated...
Thanks!
