A friend of mine has noticed what seems to be bulges or large bubble shaped protrusions in the side walls of his tires. Are his tires defective? Is this a serious issue, or are they still safe to drive on? thanks for any help that you may be able to provide!

Several years ago I had a similar problem with some Goodyear tires that came OEM with my Voyager. Goodyear told me that side wall bubbles are caused by hitting potholes or curbs too hard (although I have never had this problem on any other brand of tire and I still hit a few potholes occasionally). Goodyear said that they needed to be replaced as the bubble is "not normal." I had to pay for a new tire as they considered this "user caused damaged" which is not covered under warranty. I think there is someone else who posted a note about this same problem on his Goodyear tires wondering if they are the only tires that consistently have this problem with "side-wall" bubble. Hope this helps

Goodyears do that, as you'll notice if you follow tire postings here and in usenet groups like dodge trucks, and rvs. Especially Goodyears that come on new trucks.

When I bought my Bridgestones (haven't seen anything about them failing, reliabile on rvs) I bought a road hazard guarantee good at a chain of shops around the country. I think that's the safest thing to do. It was $8 per tire. They are Tire Pros and American Car Care, which many independents belong to.
