Could someone do a nice summary of what all common tire problems (vibration, pulling...)are 'typically' addressed by balancing the tires versus what are addressed by an alignment? I don't want to get talked into doing unnecessary work, i.e. spending more money.

Most of the time balancing will just afect ride and vibration on a smooth road.
Alignment will address handling and tire wear.
Your tires should be balanced and your car should be aligned to spec.
You should keep oil and water in the engine and air in the tires to spec.
