Do you gain much with the SP5000s over the D60/A2? Cost is pretty close, write-ups were close and technology on the R15s seemed similar.IP: Logged |

I'm no expert, but I belive the D60/A2 has been around for at least 5 years and has gotten decent reviews in Consumer Reports. My neighbor replaced his OEM Michelins a while back with a set of the D60/A2's on his '97 Prelude and found them to be better in the wet, but not as good in the dry.The SP5000 is a newer tire and probably incorporates more modern technology. I think its also more of performance oriented all-season than the D60/A2's, more like the old SP4000's. I haven't seen these around in a while. I had the SP4000's on my Eclipse GS and found them to be decent all-round tires, albeit with less mileage than I would have liked to have gotten, but the Eclipse was pretty hard on tires anyway. In short, you probably won't go wrong w/either tire. I put a set of SP9000's on my '98 SL500 and have found them to be much more satisfying then the OEM Pirelli P6000's which wore quickly and had poor wet weather handling. IP: Logged |

Jay is, for the most part, absolutely correct. The D60A2 has been around for a while. Although it has gone through upgrades & improvements about 2-3 years ago. The new (current) version is considerably better than the orginal.
The SP5000 is relatively new. Introduced mid - '99 I think. It did replace the SP4000 and is a much better tire (I have run both). Comparing the two is a little more difficult:
The D60A2 is a H rated tire and depending on size the SP5000 is a V & Z rated tire.
In the H rated category the D60A2 is a step up replacement for most OE level H rated tires. The same can be said for the SP5000. Most features of a Z rated tire compared to a H rated tire would hold true, the increased performance capabilities realized going from an H to a Z would be found when comparing these two tires. Both are good tires though with differnt application intentions.
You need to look at comparison from the stand point of what are you looking for in a tire rather than if one is better than the other. They will, as designed, provide different levels of performance and have different capabilities. Depending on where your needs & desires lie, will better serve you making a choice between these two tires.IP: Logged | |
