Please help me decide: For a 92 Eagle Talon, automatic, front-wheel drive. I already have 4 new winter tires on rims. Now, for summer, I have 4 (performance?) tires on rims: Bridgestone Potenza RE 900. Size: P205/55/R16. "Tubeless Steel Belted Radial M+S" (What does this mean? How do other types differ in function/performance?).
Anyhoo, 2 of these summer tires will last another couple of seasons, so I plan to put them on the back wheels.
Now, here's where I need help: What should I replace the front ones with? Performance? Touring? All-Season? I never drive crazy, always drive carefully. My priorities are as follows:
- 1st Most important: long-lasting (look for hi treadwear, right?)
- 2nd most imp: good fuel economy
- 3rd most imp: good wet traction & resistant to hydroplaning
- 4th: short stopping distance (if possible)
- 5th: driveable in unexpected snow or slippery conditions (ok with me if I have to slow down)
- 6th most imp: low noise (if possible)

Least important:
- I don't drive fast so I don't think I need good dry handling (don't need performance tires, right? ... But I don't want my car to look silly either.)
- I don't mind paying more if the tire has most of what I'm looking for.

I greatly appreciate sincere help from anyone who really knows about tires.

Thanks in advance,
TalonEclipseMontreal

I read both your posts, the RE 900 is an ALL SEASON performance tire, this is why is carries a M+S (mud and snow) designation. I suggest you drop by www.tirerack.com and do some research. The site is very informative. They have consumer feedback on many major brands and types of tires. For your Talon however, I would not switch to anything lower than a "T" speed rating, as even though you may not drive agressively, the suspension setup on your car is most likely optimized for that rating.

Hello Talon,
The best thing that you can do is to replace the tires with what originally came on the car, or with what you are going to use on the back.If you are using the RE900 on the back then it is usually recommended to put the same thing on the front. If they are no longer available then a comparable tire by speed rating and exact size should be fine. Speed rating, is a value given to tires for performance, a VR rated tire is good for sustained speeds in excess of like 120 miels per hour. On the sixe of the tire, it should say something like 205/55HR16, the letters in the size are the speed rating. A tire also has other information on it. Tempature, Traction, and Treadware. These are on the sidewall of the tire somewhere. The treadware is a number, the higher the number the more mileage you can expect. As for temp & traction(handling in wet, dry, etc.) are letters. An (A) is the best for both. So if the RE900 is not available try to find these items and get a tire with the same ratings. Such as 205/55SR16 Treadwear 320
Taction A, Temp B or whatever the ratings might be.
