My 98 Chevy Conversion van has 23,000 miles on it and the Michelin XW4's failed inspection. Although th etires had normal tread wear patterns the tread depth was below spec.
Does this seem normal?
At this rate I will need new tires less than every two years.

23000 seems a bit low for the XW4. I had a set on my Subaru Outback and they looked like they would get 40-50k. However, I got rid of them after 15K as I did not like the way they handled. I also had a set on a 1994 Chevy S10 pickup and they only lasted about 30K. Overall, the XW4 is a very mediocre tire. If you like Michelin, I would suggest the X-One--more money but a much better tire with a UTQG rating of 620 vs 340 for the XW4. I think the X-One is rated to go 80K.

Don't forget the enormous weight of a full size van. Tires wear much more quickly as weight increases. X-One a good suggestion.
