Topic: Sidewall failure Goodyear Eagle GA

I have a '97 Passat TDI with ~30K miles. I have now had 3 sidewall failures. One totalled the tire the other two were slow leaks at a place that could not be repaired. My driving habits with a 90hp car are far from what one would call aggressive.
Anyone else experience similar problems?? I have extensive experience in process engineering and quality control and this just seems a bit more than a coincidence.

Your information is not sufficient to decide what causes the problem.
From my experience, some people who neglect to take care of the tires, usually tire pressure, tend to have this kind of problem. I mean, if the tires are not properly inflated, in your case underinflated I guess, it causes the sidewalls wear out very quickly. Did you check the condition of the sidewall of your tires? If they are worn out abnormally, it might be that they are underinflated. Otherwise I recommend you try a four-wheel alignment check.IP: Logged |

Over the last 6 years, I have had 5 sidewall failures (2 with Eagle GAs - 3 with Eagle Aquatreds). In each instance, a bubble in the sidewall developed after encountering moderately nasty potholes. Based on this information, it would be easy to say that a road hazard caused the damage. However, during the same 6 year period, my other cars, with either Yokohama A509s or Nokian Hakka NRWs, have encountered similar potholes (isn't eastern PA grand!) without any damage. The last two Eagle Aquatreds I lost (this winter) started to make me think this is a Goodyear sidewall strength problem rather than a random problem. I believe this is true but that I have no recourse (how could the force of the impact be proven), except to not buy Goodyears again. Therefore, you can count on me not buying Goodyears ever again. Too many people in the Dodge trucks usenet group have had their original equipment Goodyears go bad. They're calling them Badyears. I would never buy a Goodyear!IP: Logged |

I, too, have had three failures with this tire....and my latest replacement has developed a blemish in the sidewall already. But this size tire on my VW Passat...215/50-15...is very hard to find! I'd love to replace it..but with what?

Driving on the lunar surfaces that the highway departments call roads is a joke in late winter and early spring (Ohio). I thought I had read somewhere that if you notify in writting the local transportation department of large and dangerous potholes they had "X" number of days to fix the road. If they do not, they are then responsible for the damage caused by the potholes. I have never had the energy to burn on chasing them down though.Impact breaks are very easy to get on large potholes. They can also damage your rims and throw out your alignment. Both can cause tire issues down the road. Since your roads are so bad you should invest in a road hazard warranty the next time that you buy tires. I don't know if Goodyear has one. IP: Logged | |
