i currently have a 1990 toyota corolla sedan. it has i believe 155..13 (.. = something i don't remember) these are tiny tires and not very good when it comes to handling. i was wondering what are the biggest tires i can put on it. would i be able to put e.g. 185..14 on it? what about 15". so how big and how wide? i don't care much about speedometer not showing the right speed or gas mileage dropping but further explanation on these is appreciated.

Hmmm, plus sizing a Corolla? Leaving aside the debate as to whether it will dramatically improve your handling, i'll take the bait. It is Friday after all. Check out www.tirerack.com/tires/knowtire.htm which will give you most of the information you desire. Of chief concern (and not really mentioned on the tirerack site) is whether the bigger tire can properly fit in the wheel well, and not contact the body of the vehicle when you are at or near full lock on the steering.
