Just bought Pirelli Scorpian AT's for my '94 Ford Explorer at my local tire shop. I had ordered the LT235/75R15's believing the LT would have stronger sidewalls. However, the LT's were not available from the distributer (sold out?) instead installed the P235/75R15XL. My question the P XL tires have a load rating of 108 versus 104 for the LT. Is there any other differences between P and LT designs? If the load rating is higher for the passenger tire isn't that the main thing I'm after in choosing the LT over a P? IP: Logged |

Due to government regulations, the load rating on a P-metric tire must be reduced by 10% when used on a LT/SUV application. PXL tires obtain their max load at 41psi. LT tires (LR-C) obtain their max at 50psi. The PXL are a little smaller, lighter, flex better, ride smoother, and often have a slightly narrower tread face. Since standard load P metric tires are original equipment on you X, either tire is acceptable and you probably saved yourself some money with the PXL's.IP: Logged |

Thanks for the response. So far I'm very pleased with the ride and performance off highway. I wonder if they will wear better or worse than the LT variety? Question, the tire dealer installed my tire with an inflation of 32 psi (this is a cold measurement taken in the morning before I drove anywhere). Ford, however, recommends only 26 psi. Should I reduce the air pressure to conform? What will doing so improve? wear? handling? performance? I presume it won't improve the mpg. Any thoughts or recommendations? IP: Logged | |
