Topic: winter tires...want the safest

I am finally going to buy winter tires instead of all season. For our Canadian winters I need the best traction for snow and ice.
I also drive a Neon....I need all the safety and help I can get from the tires.

I keep hearing about Alpine and Blizzaks. I don't care about road noise...it is a neon after all.
What I want is something that will keep me on the road weather i can see the road or not. Canadian winters are hard enough to have to worry about staying on the road.

For the best driving on snow & ice short of chains, studded tires are the ticket if they are permitted. There are many excellent choices for a vehicle like a Neon, including Gislaved, Nokian, Pirelli, Continental, and Goodyear.If studs aren't permitted or you don't want to sacrifice wet & dry handling, one of the "friction" tires mentioned in various posts would work. The best of these are good (although not quite as effective as studded tires) on ice, are the equal on snow, and are clearly superior on wet & dry pavement. Some tires to look at with somewhat different characteristics are the Nokian Hakka Q, Bridgestone Blizzak MZ-02 or WS-50, Michelin Artic-Alpin, and Toyo Observe. You might want to check out the Nokian Hakka 1's. You can get them for about the same price as the others. I chose them based on several factors. They are equal to or superior to the Alpin or the Blizzak in most of the conditions I will be facing (snow, slush and ice), and they have a substantially longer tread life. Where noise is concerned, yes they are definately not as quiet as the all seasons they replaced (they are snow tires after all), but nothting that a slight adjustment on the stereo volume doesn't cure. Try to find NOKIAN HAKKA 1 or HAKKA Q.
